Hyler, Lancaster Accept Chamber AwardsBy Kati Knowland March 26, 2008 Greensboro, N.C. — James B. Hyler Jr., former vice chairman and chief operating officer of First Citizens Bank, and H. Martin Lancaster, president of the North Carolina Community College System, were presented with awards for citizenship and public service at the North Carolina Chamber’s 66th Annual Meeting. Hyler, who was presented the Corning Award for Distinguished Citizenship, noted, "It is indeed a tremendous honor for me to receive this award." He went on to note, however, that he feels he shares the award with a group of business leaders he worked with at First Citizens. "I am a huge believer in the team. It’s all about the team. The team is much more important than any one individual. So when I think about this award, I really think about it in the context of honoring the senior management team at First Citizens Bank." Lancaster was presented the Chamber’s Award for Distinguished Public Service. "I accept this award with humility and great gratitude," he said. "But I know that this award comes to me, not because of my accomplishments, but because of what together we have been able to do for North Carolina’s future." He added that the partnership between business in North Carolina and the community college system has been and will continue to be an important part of the state’s transition from more traditional industries to more global industries. "That transition is not complete, but my successor, Dr. Scott Ralls, will lead this system through that transition," he said. "And I solicit from you again the continued support for community colleges. … Together, we will make that transition successful."
